The market town of Leiben in the district of Melk lies in the valley of the Weitenbach stream - right at the gateway to the southern Waldviertel. Wild and romantic landscapes and picturesque sights promise wonderful family excursions and relaxing short breaks. Vacation tip: In summer, the Weitenegg leisure center on the Danube lake offers a child-friendly bathing beach with pedal boats and more - idyllically situated at the foot of the Weitenegg ruins.

Europa Castle Leiben: Monument & museum

The beautiful Leiben Castle was built around 1113 and sits enthroned on a mighty rock. Following extensive renovation work, it is now used for events. Since 1991, the castle has also been home to the Austrian Agricultural Museum: on several floors, it displays agricultural tractors from the first generation around 1920 to tractors built around 1960 in permanent displays and an annual special exhibition.

Of churches and castles

The listed Lehen parish church and the late Gothic St. Corona branch church in Leiben are well worth a visit. The Weitenegg castle ruins mentioned at the beginning are a particular eye-catcher. It was first mentioned in a document in 1108 - and is now considered one of the most important of its kind along the Danube.

Fabulous hiking in Leiben

The gentle landscape offers numerous scenic hiking trails - such as the moderate long-distance hiking trail Nibelungengau 5 from Leiben to Emmersdorf or the challenging panoramic tour, which starts at the castle. An easy circular tour is the beaver circuit: it is particularly suitable for families with children and leads along the water, where the “workplaces” of the industrious beavers can be admired.

Tip: The viewing platform on the Henzing offers a perfect panoramic view of the Nibelungengau.

Our recommendation: The treasures of the Nibelungengau are hidden in the municipality of Leiben. All the treasures full of enjoyment, variety and the best views can be discovered at www.nibelungengau.at.
