The Heart of the Wachau World Heritage Trail

48.5 kilometres and 1,562 m difference in altitude in 3 days                      

The Wachau World Heritage Trail incorporates everything that makes this UNESCO world heritage region so unique: picturesque villages, historic cultural assets, and stunning nature. The 5-day hiking tour takes you through the heart of the Wachau World Heritage Trail on the left and right side of the river Danube from Dürnstein and Weißenkirchen to Spitz, Rossatzbach and back to Dürnstein (sections: 2, 3 and 11 of the Wachau World Heritage Trail).

The hosts provide a snack along the way and the transport of luggage to the next accommodation. 

Tag 1 – Arrival
Individual arrival, night incl. breakfast in Dürnstein.

Day 2 – Dürnstein – Weißenkirchen (world heritage trail section 2)
Path length 16.7 km – walking time 6 hrs
With the prospect of marvellous views and fascinating history the hike leads you from Dürnstein through grapevines across a panoramic high-altitude path to the winegrowing town of Weißenkirchen.
Night incl. breakfast in Weißenkirchen.

Day 3 – Weißenkirchen – Spitz (world heritage trail section 3)
Path length 10.5 km – walking time 3.5 hrs
This path takes you through the heart of the Wachau vineyards with typical stone terraces and well-known vineyards high above the Danube from Weißenkirchen to Spitz.
Night incl. breakfast in Spitz.

Day 4 – Spitz – Rossatzbach (world heritage trail section 11)
Path length 18 km – walking time 6.5 hrs
Wine-growing villages, vineyards, Roman paths and a conservation area with oak and hornbeam forest accompany this somewhat challenging section leading from Spitz to Hofarnsdorf and Rossatz and back to Dürnstein. This also includes two ferry trips to the other side of the Danube.

Day 5 – Return home

• If arriving by car, there are parking charges in Dürnstein

Dürnstein is accessible by public transport via Krems or Melk seven days a week.
