Along the stage from Krems to Mautern, numerous cultural highlights are waiting to be discovered. Even the hike's starting point in the middle of Krems' old town is a real eye-catcher. An ensemble combining Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture gives the city a unique ambience. The colourful Kunstmeile Krems and the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich round off the overall artistic concept. The route finally leads to Mautern via the listed steel truss bridge. The city impresses with its exceptionally well-preserved buildings of the Roman fort of Faviani and its ancient history. You can also admire exciting finds from forgotten times in the Roman Museum. Due to the short distance and easy difficulty, the first stage of the Kremstal-Danube long-distance hiking trail is also suitable for all culture lovers.

    Author’s recommendation

In Krems, be sure to plan a visit to the Kunstmeile Krems with the new Landesgalerie Niederösterreich, which will open in 2019.

Mautern an der Donau - the gateway to the Wachau - offers a spectacular view of the excellently preserved buildings of the Roman fort FAVIANIS. The Mautern Roman Museum in the baroque Schüttkasten in Mautern displays many finds that bear witness to the prolonged presence of the Romans.

We go down to the lift into  Obere Landstraße and right towards Steiner Tor. We leave the pedestrian zone at Steinertor, a part of the former city wall and today's landmark of Krems. We walk along the city park via Schiller- and Und-Straße past the monastery AND the former Capuchin monastery, to the Kunstmeile Krems and the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich, the architectonic cube, whichopened in 2019. At the end of the Steiner Landstraße, we reach the Donaulände. Over the listed, steel half-timbered bridge, the "Mauterner Brücke", you reach the Roman town of Mautern on the southern bank of the Danube, where the stage ends at Mautern town hall.
