Take time to visit Schloss Hof Estate

An imperial setting for explorers

Enter the grounds and you will be overwhelmed and amazed by the many impressions. A baroque dream with palace and gardens. As well as many animals, themed gardens and the Gutshof. Kids’ playground, chill out area and petting zoo. Schloss Hof Estate will make you want to see more!

The view of the baroque garden

with a central axis dividing the terraces into two mirroring segments is unique. A seemingly endless expanse and slowly you also discover the details of which there are many. Sculptures, fountains, a sea of flowers and trees. The terraces were strictly reconstructed and planted according to historic sources in the early 2000s. Terrace number seven - the lowest - wasn’t fully redesigned until the start of 2018. And everywhere you see the typical fountains. These fountains which splash and bubble today were, at the time of Price Eugene, only switched on for select guests at special occasions.

Where should visitors start?

There is so much on offer here, to discover and enjoy. For the whole family. Events, guided tours, workshops, children’s theatre, coach rides, special exhibitions - there’s always something on. The whole year round.

Getting here by bike

There is a bike point with all necessary facilities for cyclists in front of the main entrance with spaces in which to leave your bike, lockers with charging points and repair and service facility.  There is also a bench for a quick break.

Chill out, white donkey, fruit garden

The chill out area is a tranquil haven with seating, loungers and hammocks and plenty of room for the whole family in which to rest and relax. And there is also a kids’ playground and restaurant.
A donkey, yes. But not just any old donkey but the Austro-Hungarian white donkey.  Noblesse oblige. There are also goats, horses, spectacles sheep, mini pigs, alpacas and Bactrian camels. The animal kingdom around the palace estate is something very special indeed!

Crafts and roast pork

On the estate’s farm visitors can see what the craftspeople are doing and workshops and seminars are held in the Topfgärtnerei.  All dates are listed in the event calendar.
The estate farm’s gardens open up the next world in the empire of the Schloss Hof. Herb gardens, wine gardens, fruit and berry gardens (tasting allowed!) as well as the so- called assorted garden. You could, for example, end up standing in front of a bed labelled “Roast pork”. This might not be growing here but everything which you can use for seasoning or accompanying this dish is!

“What would Price Eugene have planted here?”

“We plant about 20 new trees in and around the estate farm every year,” says Bernhard Rödl who has been the head gardener at Schloss Hof Estate for many years. What is the criteria for planting? “We always ask ourselves: what would Prince Eugene have planted here?” The baroque garden is a preserved site of historic interest including the 5.3 km long box hedge.” There aren’t any strict rules for the rest of the area. And with regard to Prince Eugene who loved exotic plants, this leaves more leeway for such trees.  The rose garden is hidden behind a brick wall and here there are 30 varieties including the “Prince Eugene of Savoy.”

The themed gardens and the estate farm are my favourite spots. I particularly like the rose garden when everything flowers at the beginning of summer.

Insider tips from Bernhard Rödl
What is so special about Schloss Hof?

I always say that this involves the big three: firstly there is the historic castle with the baroque garden, then there is the historic estate farm and, thirdly, our animals.  An additional highlight is the big cascade.

Do you have a story which only few know?

When we were rebuilding the seventh terrace we had the idea of integrating a labyrinth or maze in it.  Now we have both and they’re really popular with visitors. The difference between the two is that in a labyrinth the paths lead to the centre whilst in a maze there are also dead ends so it’s also easy to get lost in it.
