The hike leads through terraced vineyards from Gedersdorf to the Rohrendorfer Kellergasse. The impressive landscape along the route is the programme here, as the tour offers extensive vineyards and the best regional wine to taste. After all, the destination Rohrendorf near Krems is a traditional site of vine culture - viticulture has been practised there for more than 1,000 years. This Rohrendorfer Kellergasse is also the longest of its kind in Austria and attracts wine lovers worldwide with 72 press houses and cellar tubes. Once you have reached your destination, it is worth visiting one or two wine taverns to round off the enjoyable hike.

Catering Tip: The short distance is well-suited for relaxed hikers and families with children. Once you have arrived in Rohrendorf, you can fill your hiking backpack at Nah&Frisch Markt Ebner with some regional delicacies at the Link (MO-FR 6-12:30 and 15-18 hrs, SA 6:30-12 hrs) if you decide to make your way back on foot as well. Enjoying a delicious snack and regional wines at one of the numerous Heurigen establishments is recommended. You can find out which Heuriger is open in the Online Heurigen Calendar. The more comfortable way is to take the ÖBB back to Gedersdorf station.

    Author’s recommendation

Rohrendorfer Kellergasse stretches over 1,650 m and is thus the longest Kellergasse in Austria. Here visitors will find 72 press houses and cellar tubes, some cellars dating back to the 14th/15th century and dug by monasteries, convents or manor houses into the soft loess soil or painstakingly into the solid conglomerate rock. With some luck, you can enjoy the best wines and Heurigen delicacies with an open cellar door on a vineyard terrace with a view of Göttweig.

    Turn-by-turn directions

From Gedersdorf, we have the option of hiking back to Krems via Rohrendorf, or continuing on to Langenlois. From the centre of the village, we walk about 500 m in a northerly direction. On the hiking route with the destination Krems, we turn left after the wine tavern Rohrhofer, past the wine press, into Leithenweg. Some well-known vineyards, such as Eben, Schnabl, Neusiedeln, are now on their way. Behind the Lenz Moser winery, the trail descends along numerous cellars to the main road, which we must cross to reach the centre of Rohrendorf.
