The Furth - Paudorf stage offers everything: nature, history, and amazement. Even the hike's first section presents impressive panoramic views over the Danube and the Krems Valley. But the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Göttweig Abbey also impresses along the way. With its baroque architectural style and unique location on the Göttweiger Berg, the monastery creates a unique ambience that speaks for itself. For another historical facet, it is also worth taking a short detour to the mountain's highest point. The foundation of St. George's church, built in the tenth century, lies. The rest of the tour leads to Klein-Wien, past the Filial Church of St. Blasien with its picturesque mountain cemetery. Afterwards, the stage reaches its destination Paudorf. Another nature experience awaits you at the end of the hike: the forest nature trail with its imposing redwood trees, the size of which is unique in Austria.

    Author’s recommendation

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Benedictine Abbey of Göttweig towers unmistakably on the eastern edge of the world-famous Wachau.

A detour to the redwoods is worthwhile. (approx. 2,1 miles return, Walking time approx. 1 hour).

    Turn-by-turn directions

From the Furth municipal office, we walk along Obere Landstraße before turning right into Villenweg, where the signposts to the Benedictine Abbey of Göttweig, the "Montecasino of Austria", already show us the way. From here, the trail climbs steadily uphill to Göttweig Abbey. Once at the top, a detour to the north side of the monastery is rewarded with a magnificent view of the Danube, the Krems Valley and the Wachau. Our path, however, passes to the south and, at the end of the car park, joins the Steinweg, which leads along the southern slope of the Göttweiger Berg to Klein-Wien. Passing the Schickh inn, we cross the railway tracks and, immediately afterwards, the country road before walking up to the Filialkirche. Finally, we have to pass behind the church and the cemetery and reach the first settlement houses of Paudorf on a quiet forest path. Continue along Untere Zellerstraße until you reach Bahnhofstraße, turn left and immediately right again, past the railway station to the playground, then left again, past the sports fields to the town centre, the end of the stage.
