Beer has a history; over 6,000 years ago, liquid gold was created, a random product that developed into a national drink. For the Gasthof Zum Goldenen Löwen in Maria Taferl, the care of local beer culture plays an essential role. The innkeeper and beer sommelier Andreas Frey likes to dive into the brewing process together with the guests. It is therefore not surprising: hops and malt are also found in the dishes. The beer crust roast with dark beer juice and the homemade bread dumplings confirm this. The Waldviertler dumplings with warm bacon cabbage salad get the desired note with the sour beer juice. Guests also enjoy the connection to the region in their desserts: The apricot dumplings are sweet and juicy at the same time. The Waldviertler Mohntorte more than lives up to its reputation.
Highest cultural and culinary competence
These delicacies are cooked by Margit Frey. The inn is thus a true family business, run in the fourth generation and since 1906 the first contact point for pilgrims. In addition to a home-style cuisine, guests are served cultural delights.A whole cabinet is dedicated to the heir to the throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand. In the house museum "Alpenpanorama" more than 100 moving figures tell the history of the region, which you can discover and explore. On the Nibelungengau long-distance hiking trail, World Heritage Wachau or Camino de Santiago. A visit to the Basilica of Maria Taferl, the national shrine of Lower Austria is essential.
