The market town of Klein-Pöchlarn in the district of Melk lies right in the heart of the idyllic Nibelungengau region. The densely wooded landscape is ideal for excursions and short breaks - with “walkable” routes with a magnificent Alpine foothills panorama and beautiful sights. In the past, only a roller ferry led to the village from Pöchlarn opposite, but since November 2001 a practical transport link has been created with the Pöchlarn Danube Bridge.

The great history of Klein-Pöchlarn

In ancient times, the left bank of the Danube, where Klein-Pöchlarn is located, was occupied by Germanic tribes. The Roman camp of Arelape was located right next to it. The village was first mentioned in a document in 1282. Klein-Pöchlarn was granted market rights in 1436. Due to the rich deposits of clay, loam and graphite, the craft of black smelting flourished here for centuries.

The late Gothic parish church of St. Othmar dates back to 1517 and has been continuously extended over the centuries. The listed Haberlhaus in the center of Klein-Pöchlarn is a former manor house from the 15th century. Today, the municipality boasts a modern market square and exciting sculptures.

Outdoor adventure: Rindfleischberg & bee park

The landscape of Klein-Pöchlarn is characterized by sports fields, cycle paths and hiking trails. The easy Ebenweg trail, for example, is ideal for families with children. Another great tip for nature lovers is the Rindfleischberg: it is a valuable core zone of the Strudengau-Nibelungengau European nature reserve. A new nature information trail informs visitors about the rare flora and fauna that live here. And in Austria's first bee park - which, incidentally, is located on the Nibelungengau 6 long-distance hiking trail - the bees are on the loose: “Bee Support” is constantly committed to the survival and existence of these valuable animals.

Our tip: The treasures of the Nibelungengau are hidden in the municipality of Klein-Pöchlarn. All the treasures full of enjoyment, variety and the best views can be discovered at www.nibelungengau.at.
