The world of the arena and gladiators comes to life in the Amphitheater Military City. The amphitheatre is located directly on the main road, approx. 3 km outside Petronell-Carnuntum and approx. 500 m outside Bad Deutsch-Altenburg.
The atmosphere of ancient gladiator fights can still be felt today as you walk through the arena. However, the arena was also used by the legionaries for combat exercises, for drill as well as for parades and public meetings. Perhaps even Septimius Severus, governor of the province of Upper Pannonia, was proclaimed emperor here in the amphitheatre. The amphitheatre is the only visible part of the former military town. The walls come from a new building at the end of the 2nd century AD. The arena was entered via two entrances, one in the east and one in the west. A total of up to 8,000 visitors found room in it.
The annual gladiator fights in the arena of the amphitheatre provide thrills for young and old! A special experience for children are the annual summer camps, which take place here according to the motto "Life with the Romans".
