    Turn-by-turn directions

The tour starts at the panorama panel at the castle in Leiben. The approximately 800-year-old castle thrones on a massive and steep rock and marks the transition from the southern part of the rough woodquarter into picturesque Danube valley in a very impressive way. The way leads slightly uphill through Weinzierl, via Kaumberg (hill) and through the village Ebersdorf. Here you get a great view of Melk abbey and – depending on the weather – you can also enjoy a view of the Ötscher (famous mountain in Austria). Along the wood’s edge with rare plant species the last part of the way leads down to Klein Pöchlarn on an asphalt road. From there the way first leads downstream along the Danube. Afterwards you cross the bridge and now you walk upstream until the panorama panel in Pöchlarn at the Nibelung monument. One of the most famous Austrian artists of the 20th century Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980), who was born in the Lawer Austrian city of Pöchlarn was painter, poet and graphic artist. Kokoschka museum which is located in his house of birth displays about 100 artworks of this great expressionist.
