King Ottokar II founded Marchegg prior to 1268 by building an imposing fortification complex. The castle was originally part of this complex but dons a Baroque guise today following numerous modifications and additions.

It has been owned by the municipality of Marchegg since 1954. Nowadays, it is a centerpiece of tourist activities and the gateway to the adjoining March wetlands nature preserve, home to one of the largest colonies of tree-breeding white storks in Central Europe.

In 2022, the state exhibition took place in the castle of Marchegg. Today the castle is used for an exhibition about the history of Marchegg. During a guided tour you will discover 750 years of castle history. You will find out the secrets and the archaelogical stories behind the exhibits.
