In the early 11th century built by the diocese of Passau, was the fate of the Castle full of events.
In the 15th and 16th century the castle was several times set on fire and afterwards rebuilt. 1818, the Castle took ist present form. Today the castle houses some interesting exhibition collections as well as a banqueting hall, a renaissance room, a chapel and an ethnographic room and a weapon collection in the tower.

Burg Greifenstein is closed at the moment and can only be visited from the outside.
